New French caning starts with the frame

French caning is associated with the open pattern used in seats and backs. When replacing it, the mounting method is crucial. Hand weaving through holes in the frame and fitting a pre-woven sheet into a groove involve different work.

You do not need to choose the method yourself. Photos of the edge along the weaving and the underside help clarify it. We offer French caning, and you can prepare your enquiry here.

Holes or a groove along the edge?

Examine the transition between the wood and the weaving without removing anything. Is there a series of holes through which the material is threaded? Or is there a continuous edge where a finished surface is fixed in a groove? Show both sides of the frame if possible.

The open pattern alone does not indicate which construction has been used. Therefore, a photo in the middle of the seat cannot stand alone. Previous repairs may also have altered the structure.

Seat and backrest

Please specify whether the weaving needs to be renewed on the seat, back, or both. On a back, both sides are often visible, while the underside of the seat must also be assessed for attachment and frame damage.

If the frame can be removed, disassembly must be agreed. There may be fittings or joints that must be preserved. Send images of loose parts, but avoid removing glued edges yourself or pulling damaged weaving out of the frame.

Wear, breakage and the desired appearance

Describe breaks, holes and areas that have changed shape. If the weaving is only discoloured, this must also be stated. Cleaning, minor repair and replacement are different tasks; the concrete solution depends on the condition.

New material will not necessarily have the same colour as old cane weaving. Tell us if the new surface must match other chairs. Surface and any colour treatment must be agreed based on the material rather than copied from a photo alone.

Damaged wood around the weaving

Cracks, missing wood or loose joints can affect the fastening. The frame must then be assessed together with the weaving. See furniture repair for image guidance for wood damage.

If you also want a new surface on the chair, that part must be described before the weaving work. Sanding and treatment are not automatically included in new French caning.

Price for French caning

Size, fitting type, number of surfaces and the condition of the frame are key price factors. A general material price per square metre is not the same as the price of a completed job.
