New sofa cushions without changing the whole sofa
Made-to-measure sofa cushions may be relevant when the sofa's frame is functional, but the loose cushions are worn, missing, or no longer provide the desired comfort. The inquiry must distinguish between new seat cushions, new back cushions, and a complete set.
Do you have good cushions that just need new fabric? Start with reupholstering cushions. If you want to change the sofa’s entire fixed cover and construction, the job falls under reupholstery.
Measure seat and back as two separate parts
Measure each cushion’s width, depth and thickness and mark its position on the sofa. Describe back cushions by height and position. A sketch with labels such as left seat, middle seat and right back is useful.
Also measure the space in the sofa. An old cushion may be compressed or have shifted in shape, so its current dimensions are not necessarily the correct final dimensions for a new cushion.
Indicate whether the back cushions are placed on top of the seat cushions or go down behind them. This affects how much seat depth remains, and how the parts must fit together.
Corner sofas and various sizes
On a corner sofa, cushions may have angled edges or different shapes. Specify all sides and mark corners and direction. A single overall measurement for the entire sofa is not enough to describe each piece.
If you are considering one long seat cushion instead of several, please describe the desired configuration. The division affects appearance, handling, and the possibility of turning the cushions. This must be clarified in relation to the sofa's construction and the desired upholstery.
Describe the comfort in daily use
Tell us whether the current cushions feel too soft, too hard or uneven. Describe whether you sink too far or the cushion bottoms out against its support. This is a better starting point than simply ordering “more foam”.
New cushions do not solve damage to the sofa's base. If the seat, webbing or frame is loose, it must be assessed separately under repair. Feel free to take pictures of the sofa without cushions.
Fabric, leather and details
Please specify which sides should be covered with the same material, and whether the cushions should be reversible. Edges, stitching, and buttons must be described if they are part of the desired look.
If new cushions are to fit an existing sofa cover, an exact colour match can be difficult. Light and wear change older material. Therefore, clarify the material choice based on a concrete sample or other agreed reference.
Price and approval
The price depends on the number of parts, shape, filling and covers. New covers around reused foam and completely new cushions are different jobs. Read the price guide to make the difference clear in your enquiry.
Send pictures of sofa and cushions with your sketch and wishes. The final specification must specify dimensions and construction for each part. Decisions on drop-off or delivery and the use of existing cushions as references are agreed at the same time.
