Cane-strip weaving for seat and back

Cane-strip weaving uses flat strips. When a seat or back needs renewing, the width of the strips, pattern and fastening must be considered in relation to the furniture. The exact specification cannot be determined simply by choosing “natural weaving”.

Cane-strip weaving is part of our weaving services. Send photos if you are unsure about your chair’s material, so the work can be identified before a quote is prepared.

Show the strips and edges

A close-up image must show the surface of the strips and the place where they cross each other. Also take pictures of the edges and the underside. The fixing may be hidden from normal sitting height, but it has significance for the work.

If there are broken strips, show the breaks without pulling on them. Note whether the damage is in the seat, the back, or both. If more chairs are involved, differences between them must be apparent.

Replacement or a minor repair?

Whether a limited repair makes sense depends on the condition of the rest of the weaving and on how the pattern hangs together. A single break may be visible, while other areas are also weakened. The possibility must therefore be assessed concretely.

New material may differ from older strips in colour and surface. If you wish a uniform look, this must be included in the agreement. Keep photos of the current execution if there are details that are important to you.

Frame and weaving must fit together

A loose joint or damage at the attachment is not solved with new strips alone. Therefore, also show the condition of the frame. If you wish to change the wood's finish, this must be clarified before the weaving work.

Read about furniture repair for structural damage. If the weaving instead has an open pattern with holes, French caning may be the relevant page. Broad textile straps fall under webbing weaving.

Please provide the model name if you know it, along with the quantity and which surfaces need treatment. Also specify whether you wish to retain the existing technique and colour or explore other options.
