New covers for the cushions you already have

Upholstery of cushions can consist of new cover, new filling, or both. If the cushion's shape and comfort still function, it is relevant to investigate whether the filling can be preserved. If it has sunk together or changed shape, the filling must be assessed together with the cover.

This page covers existing cushions. If you have no cushion to work from, you can instead read about made-to-measure cushions or new sofa cushions.

What can be reused?

An attractive cover can hide worn filling, while a worn cover may surround a cushion that still works well. Photograph the cushion both on and off the furniture. If the cover has a zip, you can show its contents without cutting or unpicking anything.

Describe whether the cushion flattens quickly, is softer on one side or no longer springs back. Also specify whether odour or previous moisture is significant for the task. An assessment determines which parts make sense to keep.

Fit, seams and zip

New covers must fit the desired finished cushion. An old cover may be stretched, and an old foam piece may be compressed. Therefore, neither of the parts is necessarily an exact measure of the original size.

Measure length, depth and thickness without pressing the cushion together. Show curves, slanted sides and differences between front and back edge. Draw a simple sketch if possible, and mark the cushion's front side.

If you wish for a removable cover, the placement of the zipper must suit both the shape and access. A removable cover is not necessarily machine washable. Follow the specific textile and washing instructions agreed for the material.

Seat cushions and back cushions must be described separately

Seat and back have different functions. Therefore, note the quantity of each type, and label them for example S1, S2 and R1. On a corner sofa or a bench, several cushions may have different dimensions, even if they look alike.

Also tell if all sides should have the same fabric, if the cushions are turned during use, and if buttons, edges or straps should be preserved. These details affect both appearance and scope of work.

Price and next step

A quote depends on the number of cushions, the material, the shape, the seams, and any replacement of the filling. A simple rectangular cushion and a cushion with multiple curves are not the same task. See price factors to prepare a comparable enquiry.

Then agree whether the existing cushions should be brought in as the basis for the work.
