Give Y-Chair (CH24) new life

We start with the furniture’s condition, construction and your wishes. For Y-Chair (CH24) you can choose:

  • New envelope weave
  • Flat weave (anniversary weave)
  • Restoration of woodwork; Gluing, sanding & treatment

Send images of the entire piece of furniture and close-ups of wear or damage. We assess the task and clarify materials, price and expected time with you before work begins.

Is it worth restoring?

If our restoration price exceeds what a new item would cost, we will always inform you and provide an honest assessment before we begin. In this way, you can safely choose what makes the most sense – both for you and for the planet.

Collection & delivery

We offer collection and delivery of your furniture throughout Denmark. You are also very welcome to drop off and collect from one of our workshops. We agree a time for delivery or collection that suits you.

New weaving for the Y-chair, CH24

The Y-chair has a paper cord seat. When it is worn or damaged, both the weaving and wooden frame should be assessed before agreeing on new weaving. State whether you only want to renew the seat or whether the chair also has loose joints or other damage.

CH24 is designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn. The manufacturer describes the model with a hand-woven paper cord seat. See the manufacturer’s CH24 page.

What is wrong with the seat?

Indicate whether the problem is broken thread, a changed seat shape, loose areas or stains. These problems are not the same. Also write if the seat has previously been changed or treated, and if you know the details.

A photo of the whole chair helps identify the model. Add close-ups of the centre and edges of the seat and a photo of the underside. You do not need to remove the weaving for an initial assessment.

The wooden frame before weaving

A new seat does not solve a crack or a loose joint. Tell us if the chair wobbles or moves in the frame. A defect may be located close to the weaving and be difficult to see on an overview image, so also include close-up images of the area you are concerned about.

If you also want to change the wood’s surface, agree this as a separate part of the work. Read about furniture repair to distinguish structural work from a cosmetic refresh.

New seat in an existing set

Paper cord can alter the appearance through use. A new seat will therefore not necessarily look like the other seats immediately. Specify whether it is one or more chairs, and whether they should have the same material choice.

A colour reference is useful, but the material must be confirmed for the job. Also describe whether you wish to retain the existing finish. You can read more about envelope weaving as a technique across chairs.

Caring for paper cord

Carl Hansen & Søn recommends gentle cleaning with a well-wrung cloth and avoiding rubbing spills into the material. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for paper cord, and clarify the care of the specific new material when the task is agreed upon.

A general care guide is not a guarantee that an existing stain can be removed. Describe previous cleaning attempts in the inquiry, so the assessment takes them into account.

Price for reweaving a Y-chair

The quote must specify the number of seats, material and any additional work on the frame. Transport and a desired completion date must also be clarified. See prices for chair weaving for the complete checklist.
