French caning sold by the metre is a pre-woven sheet suitable for frames designed for this mounting method. It is not a direct replacement for every type of hand weaving.
Before ordering, establish how the chair is constructed. On the page about French caning you can see what information is useful for an assessment.
Look for a groove or a row of holes
A frame with a continuous groove and finishing spline may be designed for a pre-woven sheet. If individual strips pass through holes along the edge, this indicates a different method.
This is an initial visual assessment, not a guarantee. A chair may have been altered previously. Take photos of both sides and the entire edge before removing the old material.
Measure more than the visible opening
The mat's necessary size depends on the fixing. The visible opening is therefore not in itself a finished order size. Get the supplier's requirements for additions and mounting, and check how the dimensions should be specified.
Note width and depth in several places if the frame is not rectangular. With curves you should make a precise template and specify which side faces upwards. A rough drawing can be used for the first dialogue, but not necessarily for final cutting.
Match the scale of the pattern
Two nets with the same general expression can have different openings and strip widths. Compare a sample with the existing weave or with other chairs in the set.
Also agree on the orientation. On a clearly shaped back, it may be important where the pattern is located relative to the centre. Save reference photos so the wish is not merely described as 'as before'.
Check the frame before thinking about mounting
Cracks, loose joints or a damaged groove should be assessed first. There is little point in planning new material without knowing whether the frame can hold it correctly.

Order once the solution is confirmed
Gather the material type, pattern, dimensions and accessories in one list. Do not buy a random finishing spline just because it resembles the old one. Parts must fit together. If unsure about the material, use the overview of chair weaving materials as preparation.
