New weaving for Folkestolen, J39

Folkestolen, J39, is Børge Mogensen's chair with a paper cord seat. When renewing the seat, assess the weaving together with the frame's condition. New weaving and woodwork are separate elements that must be clear in the agreement.

Fredericia describes J39 as a chair designed by Børge Mogensen in 1947 with a woven paper cord seat. See the manufacturer's model information. The information identifies the model; it is not a price list for repairs at Møbelpartner.

Send pictures of your exact chair

An overview image shows the model and proportions. Additionally, take a photo of the seat from above and from underneath. Show any breaks in the weaving, damaged edges and damage to the wood.

Tell us if the chair has had a new seat before, if you know. Previous weaving and repairs may affect the next task. If you are unsure whether the chair is a J39, then send any labelling instead of guessing.

The seat's condition and desired result

A seat with visible breaks requires a different assessment than a seat that has only changed colour. Also state whether the comfort has changed, or if there are areas that feel loose.

Tell us if you wish to retain the existing finish. Material type, thickness and colour must be agreed upon concretely. A new paper cord seat may have a different appearance than older seats in the same set, so please show all chairs together.

The whole set or individual chairs?

Number the chairs if they are in different conditions. Mark which ones need new weaving and which ones should perhaps only be assessed. A set may include different surface treatments or previous repairs, even if the model name is common.

An assessment of multiple chairs can account for the total job, but a specific quantity discount or a uniform price for all chairs must be agreed upon.

Frame repair

Loose joints, cracks, or a chair that does not stand stably must be described before reweaving. If work is to be done on the wood, it must be planned in conjunction with the seat. Read more about furniture repair.

You should also clarify whether patina and existing surface should be preserved. Sanding is not automatically part of obtaining new weaving and is not necessarily the desired solution.
