New flat weaving that respects the seat’s construction

Flat weaving is a weaving technique for a flat, woven seat. When replacing, the pattern, material, and attachment must match the chair. A photo of the underside is therefore at least as relevant as a photo from above.

We help with flat weaving and other furniture services, so a loose frame and a worn seat can be described in one enquiry.

Look at the whole seat

Photograph the weaving, the edges, and the connection to the frame. If part of the seat has collapsed, show both the affected area and the rest of the seat. This helps distinguish local damage from general wear.

The material may be dirty, faded or altered by previous treatments. Describe any known repairs and, if you know, tell us whether the current weaving is original or a later replacement. There is no need to guess its thickness or material name.

Fastening and woodwork

Fixing is part of the task. Loose or damaged areas under the seat can affect what needs to be done before new weaving is mounted. Do not take the frame apart, and do not remove old fixings to make the chair 'ready', unless it has been agreed.

If the wood needs repair or surface treatment, it must be considered together with the weaving. Furniture repair describes which information is relevant regarding cracks and loose joints.

A documented example

On the examples page you can see an N.O. Møller Model 56 in oak with new flat weaving and renovated woodwork. The shown chair is described as fully restored; the other chairs in the batch are prepared on order. This illustrates the difference between a new seat and a broader restoration. See the specific example.

Your chair must be assessed independently. The example is not an indication that all chairs must be sanded or have the same surface treatment.

Agree on appearance and scope

Specify whether you wish to retain the material colour, and whether the chair should match an existing set. New weaving can have a different expression than seats that have aged through many years of use. It is worth taking into account when only a few chairs are being renewed.
