When measuring up to a cushion, you must first describe the space the cushion needs to fit into. An old cushion may have sagged or changed shape. Therefore, its measurements should be kept separate from the measurements of the furniture itself.
For made-to-measure cushions your initial measurements help clarify the job. The final specification must be confirmed before anything is made.
Measure the space without guessing deductions
Note length and depth in several places if the cushion must lie between fixed sides. Measure without bending the tape measure around edges. Specify all measurements in the same unit, for example centimeters.
Do not add or subtract a random amount yourself. Instead, write clearly 'measured space'. Fitting, upholstery and construction must be included in the subsequent agreement for final dimensions.
Draw the shape from above
A simple drawing is worth more than a long list of numbers without placement. Mark front, back, right and left. Set the dimensions directly on the sides they belong to.
For trapezoidal shapes, both front and back edges must be included. For curves and cutouts, it must be agreed whether a physical template is necessary. Photograph the drawing together with the furniture so the orientation can be understood.
Describe the thickness when in use
The desired thickness is not just a matter of appearance. It changes the final seat height and the relationship to the table, armrests and back. Please state whether the aim is to maintain the current height or alter it.
If there is also to be a back cushion, its space must be considered. A thicker back can reduce the depth you sit in. See indoor bench cushions for the typical conditions surrounding a fixed bench.
Number multiple parts
Number each cushion, and use the number on the drawing, photo, and measurement list. Do not assume that two similar locations are identical or mirror images. Check them separately.
For boat cushions orientation and templates are especially important. The same applies to built-in seats with angled walls or access to hatches.
Send a complete set of measurements
Please provide an overview photo, drawing, dimensions, quantity, intended use, and any old cushions as reference. Also specify whether you want foam only or a finished cushion with upholstery.
If you sew it yourself, measurements and seam allowances for cushion covers must be handled separately. Measurements of the furniture are not automatically fabric cutting dimensions.
