Boat cushions often require more than length, width and thickness. Sloping sides, curves and several parts that must meet make a clear measurement basis important. In addition comes the difference between a protected cabin and an exposed cockpit.
Start with made-to-measure boat cushions and describe the placement and usage before determining materials.
Make a plan of all parts
Draw the layout from above and number each cushion. Use the same number on images and templates. Mark front and back edge, and port and starboard, if this helps with orientation.
Two parts may appear mirror-reversed without being identical. Therefore, check each seat. Also specify whether the template shows the top, bottom, or the flat side the cushion should lie on.
Measure thickness together with the slanted shape
If the wall is leaning, the cushion's top and bottom may have different dimensions. A flat template does not always describe this difference. Therefore, show the side with a photo and a drawing of the profile.
Use the measuring guide as a basis, and agree on which templates are required. An old cushion is useful as a reference, but may have changed shape.
Keep access and ventilation clear
Show hatches, cupboards and the places where the cushions must be lifted. Agree on division and zipper placement, so daily use functions. Also describe the substrate and the possibilities for air around the cushion.
If there is already a moisture problem, the cause must be addressed. New upholstery is not in itself a solution to water ingress or insufficient drying.
Distinguish between cabin and cockpit
Describe exposure to sun, splashes and rain, and how the cushion is stored. Do not choose an indoor seating material for an exposed seat without documented suitability. The guide to outdoor cushions explains why fabric and filling must be assessed together.
Also send any special requirements from the boat manufacturer or application with the inquiry. A general designation such as 'maritime fabric' should not replace specific material information.
Describe the sleeping function
