The Egg chair's large, continuous surfaces highlight both material and shape. Before reupholstery, clarify more than colour alone. A good process starts with a shared description of the chair and your desired result.

1. Which chair and history are we talking about?
Photograph the marking, underside, and the entire chair. State the approximate purchase year if you know it, and whether the cover has previously been changed or repair work carried out.
Separate secure information from assumptions. A model name is not alone documentation for age, originality or the current construction. Also save images from earlier, if they show details you wish to recreate.
2. What doesn't work today?
Is the problem wear, a changed colour, uneven comfort or a function of the chair? Note the symptoms separately. Work on the upholstery is not automatically work on the base, mechanism or construction.

3. What needs to happen beneath the cover?
Ask which layers are expected to be preserved and which may need renewal. If something can only be assessed after disassembly, the process for extra work must be agreed upon.
The aim may be to preserve the shape or restore support. “More filling” describes neither precisely. Use photos and your experience of sitting in the chair as the starting point.
4. How should the material and seams look?
See a physical sample and clarify the placement of seams and finishes. For leather, natural variations and surface treatment should be included in the choice. Read the guide to leather, before deciding on colour alone.
If a footstool or another chair needs to match, show the pieces together. New material will not necessarily match an existing older cover exactly.
5. What is included in the final agreement?
Have the material, scope, exclusions and practical items recorded. See the quote checklist for each individual point.
