High-resilience foam does not have one fixed comfort level. The Danish term “koldskum” usually refers to HR foam, but the specific grade needs a fuller description. Density and hardness are easily confused even though they describe different properties.
When you compare made-to-measure foam, you should ask for information about both properties and the recommended use.
Density: how much the material weighs
Density is mass per volume and is often expressed in kilograms per cubic metre. It is not the same as the weight of your finished cushion, which also depends on size.
A higher density figure is also not in itself an indication of how hard the seat feels. EUROPUR treats density and hardness as separate properties of flexible polyurethane foam.
Hardness: resistance under a specific test
Hardness describes the material's resistance to load under a specified test basis. Ask for the method and unit if you are comparing figures from different suppliers.
Designations such as 'firm' and 'medium' are not necessarily directly comparable across ranges. Ask what they mean for the current quality and thickness.
The thickness changes the experience
A thin cushion on a rigid board and a thicker cushion on a flexible underlay have different prerequisites. Therefore, you should not choose quality based solely on a small sample.
Describe the entire structure, and see the guide to choosing foam. If you wish to change the final height, the relationship to the table, backrest, and armrest should also be considered.
Compare specifications, not foam colours
Colour is not a common standard that makes it possible to rank all foam products. Instead, ask for the quality's name, density, hardness information, dimensions, and application.
Save the details in the quote. It makes it easier to order a corresponding part later, without having to remember a colour or feel.
Avoid promising more than the material data shows
A foam type alone does not establish a particular lifespan or sleep result. The finished product and its use also matter. This is especially true for cushions in a caravan, where the same part can be used for both seat and bed.
For a chair with fixed upholstery, the complete upholstery construction of the furniture is a better starting point than simply replacing one material with another.
